Image Replacement and SEO

hello.

so, your <h1> is an image, lets say, a logo:

would you be allowed to have your <h1> read thus:

<h1>Designer's Talk - Web design forums for designers to website design</h1>

is this bad practice, likely to get a site black listed, or (as i believe) offering a true text alternative representation of the missing graphical element.

how far can you take it?

cheers,.

I try to avoid having more HTML text than is replaced, but I'm sure a bit of extra text isn't going to incur The Wrath of Google - they seem to have bigger fish to fry. German fish.

SE's cannot read images or css so you can use this to fool them as much as you like.

You can even get away with hiding some text - if you place it over a background image of the same colour and specify the background image using css - much like the use of images in headers. I have seen excellent results in google using a few of these black hat tricks. What the SE's don't know can't hurt you

I'm sure it's only a matter of time until the only kind of sites that Google will index are those that are text filled pap and no substance.
