How does Reddit and similar sites work

Hi everyone,

I know how to submit my site to social bookmarking sites such as Reddit but what is the key to making these kinds of sites work (both from an SEO perspective and to increase direct traffic to websites)?

What does everyone think are the best social bookmarking sites?

Thanks
Nadja

Content.

Social bookmarking/recommendation sites work by having large numbers of people recommend a piece of content. Without having content good enough for a large number of people to recommend it these sites aren't going to help you.

Once you’ve got the hang of it, it’s really quite simple to add your own stories and obviously posts from your blog/website.

You could also try:

Digg - The Latest News Headlines, Videos and Images

and

Home | Propeller

are two of the biggest ones. They are pretty generic.

Here's a great list of designer based ones I found on a site yesterday:

actually social networking is the buzz word for these days. The main benefit of social networking site is that we can have both traffic and SERP ranking using this. People are more and more aware about these sites and a huge mob our there is visiting these sites, who is looking for grabbing you information. Moreover in Digg, the bookmarks are also shared by search engine like Google and Yahoo.

StumbleUpon is another good one.

I've seen my GA stats spike dramatically after writing one blog article that was topical at the time. In the SEO business some people mention "the StumbleUpon shark" to describe this kind of phenomenon. (Your GA graph
line resembles a shark fin!).

Hopefully the people who come to your site on the basis of some specific article will find your site useful enough and attractive enough to bookmark/RSS/sign up for newsletter or whatever.

The key in social bookmarking is: while you submit an article to this type of website you get a back link to your site.
Most popular sites are: Digg, Delicious, Propeller (3-5 is more than enough to do social bookmarking)

If you're after decent (targeted and converting) traffic then spending time on Reddit or Digg can be a waste of time. People browsing these sites are on a hunt for something interesting that is bite size - they'll look at your content and then leave straight away.

There are a few occassions where a community will rally together to support a website (e.g. Reddit's choice of imgur as their image hosting, the soap shop inicident and various other things) but this is the exception rather than the rule.

If you're making something viral, people will inevitably end up linking to youtube if it's a video or if it's an image they'll upload it to imgur. It's VERY difficult to get decent backlinks and converting traffic from social news websites.

If you're trying to promote your latest kitten photo or if you want to show off your hot girlfriend, then Reddit or Digg is the place to go.

Otherwise, get your blog entries on distribution sites, do social media press releases, become active in niche communities where you can share your blog posts (without making it spammy), do guest blog posts on other sites etc and eventually you will start to get a readership.

Make sure to enable trackbacks on your blog and make it easy for people to comment and share your links of social websites. If you make something good and you have a handful of readers with their own websites you have a much bigger chance of getting noticed in the world of social media.

Shameless self promotion never works in social media, people are too savvy - if you're going to do that, do some advertising and blog/forum sponsorship.

Well said.

People at the office always ask me "How can we get our blog article on Digg?".

Its almost always the same answer. The target market that read Digg or Reddit don't give a shit about "How marketing can help your business grow!". No one uses those social network sites as valid searches for information. They use it to get a good laugh, find out who hates Glenn Beck today, see some racey photos etc...

That is a great way to put it. Bite sized content is exactly what it is .. it should definitely not be a major part of your SEO strategy.. and if it is, you're in trouble.

Bingo. I think people must understand that social bookmarking sites will not really bring the conversions. The benefit that exists there is traffic generation that could help you in SERP rankings, that will ultimately bring in the potential conversions you are seeking (assuming you do proper keyword targeting).

Real businesses need to do real Internet marketing. There is a reason big businesses spend millions on Super Bowl ads, you are paying for something because it is valuable. Paid advertising can be valuable if you do it right.. it is imperative that small businesses on the web understand how to leverage the Internet marketing landscape to their advantage. Money is a tool for that.
