Many people may not do this but I would say, try to make your domain unique. And only use .net if your a network, .org if your a organization. Don't just go the next domains just because there the only available. Try to get a .com if possible because many times when people type in domains, they will type .com.

Also, get a unique name.

Use google. (remember to do SEO)

and probably link exchanging too.

Getting ads on popular sides such as this.

1. Enter "Domain For Sale" in the whois information of domain
   
2. Provide an email address on your domain yourname@yourdomain.com and give it others when you want to advertise your domain
   
3. Participate in all auction places
