Domain Name Suggestions

I am in need of a domain name and I'm wondering what would be most memorable and best as far as marketing. For sake of discussion let's say my website is about Peanut Butter. I was really wanting Peanutbutter.com, but it was taken. A couple options are Peanut-Butter.com or Peanutbutter.net.

Which do you think would be best a .net address or one with a hyphen? Is it more likely that someone will remember that the address has a hyphen or that it is a .net and not a .com.

Thanks for the help.

if you are that worried about it get them both, and have one redirect to the other. I try and get the .com one that I want first then I goto .net and if all else fails I go for .cc (cocoa islands) just cos I like it.

If you're like the peanut butter industry group, then peanutbutter.org. Otherwise -- for marketing purposes -- don't use the generic category name. Instead use the brand name your marketing is designed to get into the mind of customers.

Honestly, do you search for category names, or brand names?

Marketing success wise, which would you rather have...

....greetingcards.com or bluemountain

....books.com or amazon

....auctionhouse.com or eBay

The category.com thing was conventional wisdom in 1996, not today. If you want to understand why buy books on positioning, (a.k.a. marketing) or visit ries.com

I consider .net addresses worthless. Most people still think internet is .com only. Web addresses with "-" are worthless too. It is so hard for you to market it and for people to remember. You have to be a bit creative when it comes to domain names. My basic rule is keep it simple and keep it very short. 2 words are the best. 3 words are borderline okay if they are easy to remember. 4 words are way too long. ALWAYS go with .com address.

Re: Domain Name Suggestions

I will first try for Peanutbutter with any extension and if I wont be able to get it then I will surely choose Peanut-butter.com Last night I was reading one article at articledashboard.com/Article/How-to-Choose-Perfect-Domain-Name-for-your-website-/156687 and I found it very good. hope it will give some idea.

Get the .net one. Because, as said, people may forget the hyphen or put it in the wrong place. I am a victim of this lol.

^^As an owner of several websites myself I couldn't say this better. You
need to compensate for these possible discrepancies in the URL, don't trust
a user to have a good memory, they are more than likely to misspell your URL
the first few times they try. Purchase as many alternate "similar" domains as
you are willing to afford in order to compensate for this. Otherwise you'll most
likely never see those users again

I trade in domain names, .com is always the best, followed by the country TLD that you would be trading in ie .co.uk for England, .de for Germany.

.net is usually associated with business or corporations.

Hyphens are ok for keywords, but in general i wouldn't buy them for re-sale.

Typo's can get traffic to your site if you get a good one.

What you must do is think "What would i type into a search engine if i was looking for that product/service" and try to get as close to that as possible.
