How to market a web host
Hi there, I run a web hosting business full time with my business partner, we now employ 15 people and we're doing quit well, the only thing that we've had problems with, is marketing, SEO is quit useful as a lot of customers come though Google and msn ect.. Although I'm thinking is there any other methods? In the next 2weeks im going to start a Google AdWords campaign. I'm wondering does any one else have any ideas? the company domain name is Greenlush.com Any suggestions would be great. Regards |

Head on over to webhostingtalk.com - actively talk and contribute to the community and post your services to the advertising section... this will give you a kick start. In the long term build up links to your website and concentrate on some unique keywords - there are loads of things you can do... those are just a couple of suggestions... |

Contributing to forums like webhostingtalk and sitepoint are really great for starting out. The owner of my old webhost posted on those forums frequently, and while his services weren't very stellar (IMHO), people kept flocking to his hosting company, because he was very respectable and helpful on these forums. Never mentioned about his company directly (just in advertising forum and through his signature) either. |

Oh i remember something about that, my partner, it was all a big misunderstanding as we know the developer of the site and we wanted to cause a fuss by using the layout and posting on every single web related forum and getting loads of people talking about us as a web host although.... It sadly backfired. It was a while ago and it wasn't anything to do with me, i only heard the minute after i typed the URL into Google and find the top 10 listings forum posts of people giving the company a huge huge slating. So... Any suggestions apart from copy a well known site for a few days and cause a fuss. Didn't work |

I'v been building up a few links although i don't want to spend too much more as i already have a $500 a month text-link-ads.com campaign. So from now on its just link exchanges with my other 970+ sites, there is many spots available so im just going to exchange with other webmasters. Hopefully this will help a little bit for traffic and a little bit for search engines. |

I use Webhostingtalk all the time and we get many customers putting it as the refer when signing up to reseller and dedicated server packaes.Allthough i dont use Site point because it seems really hard to navigate, i have posted a few and i payed for a few highlighted listings so it would get me a highlighted listing on webmaster-talk to... but it didnt really bring much traffic in. Thanks for the suggestions. |

jasonb - so basically your business partner (if i understand you correctly), decided to use an identical site layout in order to create discussion about your web hosting company and hence potentially bring you more customers? If i've understood correctly thats so, so stupid, in fact action like that is likely to cause a negative effect on your hosting company, give you and your business a bad reputation and lose you customers! As for building up backlinks, just start submitting to free web directories. If you really want to spend money find some popular related paid directories with good PR and submit to them! |

Getting rid of all the porn on the support forum might be a good idea - http://www.greenlush.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=236 Also, why lie saying you've been around since 2005 etc, I wouldnt trust a host that tells porkies. ..................

Strange, when I reported it to him he didn't seem very happy, and your website was removed from several free hosting accounts because he complained to them. Tbh, I doubt you have 15 staff (what the hell do they all do?) since you have only just started out in the last few months. Stop lying, and perhaps, just maybe, someone will trust you enough to pay you for hosting. WHOIS Result: Domain Name: GREENLUSH.COM Registrar: TUCOWS INC. Whois Server: whois.opensrs.net Referral URL: http://domainhelp.tucows.com Name Server: NS1.GREENLUSH.COM Name Server: NS2.GREENLUSH.COM Status: ok Updated Date: 21-oct-2006 Creation Date: 01-jul-2006 Expiration Date: 01-jul-2008 More lies so it seems. Also, as you are trading online, you really ought to put a real address on your domain. Writing "no", "no", "no" in the fields could potentially see you having the domain taken off of you. |

Invalid DNS information, naughty naughty - you can loose the domain if someone reports you for that - oh and Oli was right - the domain way bought on 1st July 2006 and wasnt it a top webdesign studio before you employed 15 people to do your webhosting? |
