how important is the name for a website

i have just finished working on sprinj

it is just the first version [on experimetnal phase right now], and i focused solely on design and programming and not much about marketing or about advertising my website.

right now, my biggest concern is the name sprinj (i wanted spring.com but it was already taken, no suprise). it's not obvious how to spell or pronounce it.

the thing is i have seen many websites recently that have weird names but works (like flickr or digg or zooomr ) do you think with a name like that my website could work? or the name should change

info : Sprinj is a website where people and their friends can organize and plan activities/events.

You're biggest problem: I spent about 10 seconds on the homepage and still had no idea what the site was about.

Also, the reason things like Flickr and Digg are successful (in terms of their names) are that those names carry multiple levels of meaning and are immediately recognizable and pronouncable.

When you see "flickr" you know it's a modified version of "flicker" and relates to the purpose of the site - taking pictures, posting them, sharing them. Digg you understand because it's a familiar word (dig) and carries meaning: "Can you dig it?" and it's so full of content that you can literally "dig" for articles.

"Sprinj" doesn't make me think of "spring". The sounds are completely different and at first I thought it might be an Indian word or something. I'd rethink the name. And make it apparent what the site does and why I want to spend more than 5 seconds there.

What do you mean? Google is obviously derived from "googolplex", which is reflective of the massive amounts of information they index.

Yahoo doesn't "mean" anything exactly. It's more of an immediate emotional recognition - and it works.

You think that's why Google is so well-known? I guarantee the majority of normal people have no idea why Google is called that, they're popular because the quality of their service(s) is generally better than the competition and they came along at the right time...

Apparantly it was meant to be called Googol - (the number 1 followed by 100 zeros) but somewhere along the line it got misspelled.

Don't know how true that is though

I'm changing my website very soon. I work by word of mouth, so I tell people about my site and they look at me funny... or I give them my business card and they go "chezzzzz. . . mi-LAY-ga-ro.?"

So yes, name does matter.

you know what, i think it is mission impossible to find a pronounceable, easy to remember, catchy and reflective of the nature of the website these days, except if you have a lot of patience and $$$ . and google too, i am not sure you would have known how to spell it, the first time someone told you about this search engine. gogail, googgl, gougle, gougal, googaille ...mmm... like sprinj.com you just need someone to spell it once and you are set.

not that I am saying that the name sprinj is good, it isn't, the inspiration came but well, all names were taken.

how about using sponj.com ??? or spunj ?? - implying 'sponge'

that suggests a facility for soaking up water (or for information in your case - tell us everything - and we'll soak it up )

fuck it - thats quite a good one - I may even get that one myself ...

its also a type of cake.
