Have you ever heard of SEO (search engine optimization)? Basically its the process of improving your website so that it ranks well in the search engines under your given keyword(s) and also attains a google PR ranking (thats that green bar you see in the google toolbar which score the importance of your site between 0 and 10). To improve your SERPs and your Google PR rank there are various things you can do - one of the most popular and most common methods is building backlinks. The more backlinks a website has the higher PR and SERPs (search engine results page) your website will have. In simply terms, directories are a fantastic method of building backlinks and hence a method of potentially increasing the visability of your products and services in the search engines. And in answer to your question 'who actually uses these sites?' - probably a few hundred thousand webmaster and site developers... needless to say directories and lists of specifically free submission directories are really rather popular!!! |
