What is the idea?

The idea is simple: to try and make $1m (US) by selling 1,000,000 pixels for $1 each. Hence, 'The Million Dollar Homepage". The main motivation for doing this is to pay for my degree studies, because I don't like the idea of graduating with a huge student debt. I know people who are paying off student loans 15-20 years after they graduated. Not a nice thought!

Good luck to him. He's had some good coverage (Beeb, Guardian, Register) which should help.

I love the TM at the end of his logo, on a font that he didn't buy.

Well done to him for making 8k out of it already.

No idea why people are bothering to buy space though... Sure it's going to do the viral thing for a while, and while there's not much on it so to start with a few people will get clicks... Of course the more people that get on there the less visible links will be and the less likely to get clicks... Also none of the clicks will be targetted in any way with such a small space.

Also the more people that buy links on there the more it may become seen by search engines as a link-farm so once the viral effect wears off it will be dead.

But much as I think anyone buying space on there must have money to burn, as it is far from a viable advertising medium, I still have to big him up for making money from this shit.

Some nice creativity from the advertisers in the small space available I guess... Particularly like the idea of the bottom right corner, possibly making people think their link leads to another page within the site and getting a click. Albeit an unqualified and useless click.

Bottom line...good summary, and good for him. Hell of a profit margin I'm sure...

Assuming he makes not 1 penny more, what could it possibly cost him to host this until 2010?

United States:
Million Dollar Homepage

Europe:

Joke:
Million Penny Homepage

I even hear there is a zero dollar homepage somewhere.

I cannot believe the guy has made as much as he has. Maybe all the various "million" sites need to have a race to the finish line.

well, i think he's genius... he saw that people were dumb enough to cough up dough for a small square of advertising, and he went for it... props to him.

Reminds me a lot of http://www.savetoby.com/ now this was absolute genius, but i think he got sued, not sure...
