PHP Set Up

Just got a new mac, running php on the in built apache server but I've hit some problems with scripts I know work. So I've run a couple of tests and nailed it down to this... my if statements don't work!?

Huh?

What could cause this to not work?

Code:
if ( "1" == "1" ) { print "thank fuck"; }else{ print "eh?"; }

It doesn't do nothin'

Have they introduced something in a newer version of the php sytax that I'm missing or have i overlooked something/just gone crazy?
