PHP shopping-cart/payment processor bridge

Hey all.

I'm a competent enough PHP coder to create a shopping-cart system from scratch (then again, so are about a million other people..) and am planning to do so in the near future to have it "in the library" so to speak. I've done a bit of research and understand that the client in any case would need an internet merchant account and a payment processor account with a specific vendor (e.g. World Pay / SecureTrading, etc).

What i'm struggling to find is information on how to create the bridge between my (self-coded) shopping-cart system and the individual payment processors. I've looked at some commercial shopping-cart systems and they seem to be tied down to specific processors, so i'm guessing there isn't a standardised (i'm thinking/wishing xml?) format for these bridges?

Any and all help/opinions/links/insults gratefully received as ever

[note: i posted this over at DO too, if you visit there, just ignore this]

phone the banks and ask them who they recommend. some banks have a system already setup, others haven't bothered and ask you to use outsourced services such as protx (www.protx.com).
