country list

it seems every time a client needs a list of countries for a website i lose the last one i made, so to help myself (and all of your other lucky people) i have compiled a list of all the countries in the world and saved them in various formats to save you the headache of doing it yourself: Country List of Countries

Really - so you compiled that list yourself then? Found out the name of every country and typed them all in. You didn't cut and paste it from someone else's site at all...

I admit, i didn't write every country in, but I did have to do a fair amount of modification to create a "standalone" list of countries. The fact of the matter is that I found it difficult (well, make that impossible) to find a simple list of countries in a format that could be pulled into a database. So what I've done is create that list from the information already out there on the web and provide it in the various formats, such as CSV, text and the HTML dropdown.

It wasn't rocket science to do but I hope people will find it useful.

The above list should suit most people for those that need something more indepth.

It's not in CSV or other format but with very little effort you can convert it.

https://www.cia.gov/library/publicat...ppendix-d.html

There is a more up to date list from Wikipedia
ISO 3166-1 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There was another that I used which had a majority fo the formats needed but it escapes me at the moment.

Both the link are site I own so please include me in your credits. Thanks. j/k

naatan, please explain! As a plain old english speaker I thought countries were countries regardless of language.. obviously eastern languages have a different alphabet, but I wasnt aware (possibly naively) that different countries have different ways of spelling countries - if that is the case i'd love to update the page to incorporate these differences

Of course every language has their own way of pronouncing a countries name.

For example, I'm dutch.. and in the netherlands we don't call England "England".. but we call it "Engeland".. small difference but it's just to demonstrate that it's not the same.

My country is called "Nederland" in dutch.. whilst you english lot call it "The Netherlands" (holland is not a country - it's a region)

Anyway that's why I said it would be cool to have a listing of countries in different languages, the CMS I'm working on is multi-lingual and this is the only part I'm having trouble with translating :p

In Japan, the country isn't even called 'Japan', its 'Nihon' or 'Nippon'. 'Japan' is just something that (I believe) the Portuguese made up a few hundred years ago when they first came.

In Japan, country names, besides being written in chinese characters have entirely different names and there are two names as well. Some examples:

Belgium - Berugi
England - Igirisu and/or Eikoku
The USA - Amerika and/or Beikoku
Canada - Kanada and/or Kakoku
Ukraine - Ukraina
Mexico - Mekishiko
Australia - Oosutoraria

And many more!

Thats actually a pretty good idea. We could use your original list as a reference and a starting point. I'll definitely contribute on the Japanese side.
