great What i'll do is setup a small wiki and create a table with the list of all the countries - in the column headings i'll put the various languages and people can fill in the blanks! |

Neighbours have always called nearby foreign countries after a region familiar to them. England gets its name from Anglia, the bit nearest Holland. Holland comes from the name of a region, as you rightly point out. Finland is actually the south western corner of the country, named by the Swedes. Estonia is called Viro in Finnish, after the county on the northern Estonian coast. And so it goes. There's no point in being indignant that Brits called Nederland Holland. The Dutch are not responsible for the English language, so just try to live with it! About the country list - I think the most practical one would be a list with the names of the countries in the major language used in that country rather than them all being in one language. After all, a Greek is scanning the list for 'ελλασ, a German for Deutschland, a Hungarian for Magyarország and an Irishman for Éire etc. Last edited by steveb : 19-04-2008 at 13:50. |

I was simply pointing out a fact that is often misunderstood, I have no problem with people referring to the Netherlands as "Holland".. I just try to refer to it correctly myself and point out why I do so to prevent any further misunderstandings It's an interesting subject though.. thanks for the elaboration |

right everybody, you can see the wiki page at: country-list [Guava Studios Wiki] you will need to register in order to edit (so that I can give all the people who help out credit etc). The wiki I am using is dokuwiki so please view their documentation page on how tables work for when you are editing the page: http://wiki.splitbrain.org/wiki:syntax Good luck everyone |

I'll be honest, I'm more than into doing it, but as an open-source type project. That page is from a/your studio, which while I'm sure you're an up and honest guy, I'd still feel better doing it on an open-source wiki. Edit: If you don't have some server space, I'm sure someone has some they'd be willing to donate. |

It's not like this is a huge open-source project.. it's a simple country list.. besides stealthcow seems to want to credit those who contribute so I don't really see a problem there That being said; I do feel that it would be fair if at the top of the list it would emphasize that the work done on that list is done by volunteers of the opensource community and not necessarily by "Guava Studios" itself. |

That's the Finnish column done. I had to leave out place names like "The Lesser Visited Outlying American Offshore Islands" because I've never heard of them. And neither has my atlas! I also discovered that the "and" in St Kitts and Nevis is not translated as "ja". Shall have to remember that! |

Just "US" works, I think. Even though they're not states. Find good advice in the beginners web design thread.

Don't miss: wwwDOTiso.org/iso/country_codes/iso_3166_code_lists/english_country_names_and_code_elements.htm English and French are the internationally agreed languages of diplomacy and the Universal Postal Union's 189 members have the same understanding. Very useful: wwwDOTaddressdoctor.com/lookup/default.aspx?lang=en |
