how long to build a message board?

i'm re-building an existing site and bringing it up to web standards. i've also been asked to build a forum, or message board and incorporate it into the site.

Can anyone give me an idea, in hours, about how long it might take to implement this component? I'm probably going to use some scripts that are already available and work them into the site's framework.

Thanks for your help...

ps. i've got a pretty strong background in both front and back end web development so there shouldn't be anything that really stumps me (at least not for too long) but i have never built or implemented a forum before.

Why not just use some of the free forum software out there?

Use vBulletin. It's the best forum software out there by far IMO, (DT uses it). It's not cheap but you build that into your price. Customization time about a day for your first time doing it so long as you are prepared.

vBulletin is way too bloated for most projects. Vanilla - Free, Open-Source Forum Software has a real small basic engine which is easily extendable with lots of freely available plugins + its layouts are standards based.

Damn I sound like a sales person for vanilla here.
