Tracking users via image in PHP

I'm in the process of writing a script that uses an image to track visitors (forum, social networking sites, etc.), and I am trying to figure out how I am going to get it to work. I know I could be simple and use apache logs, but being on a shared host and being jailed, I don't have access to them. Has anyone attempted this or know what I am talking about and could possibly help me?

have PHP generate and image using the GD library... using code similar to what was done here.
Subnav Script

then in the php log w/e info you want to a database or file. and enjoy.
