is there a direct equivalent of a meta refresh in AJAX, which just refreshes a whole page without the screen flickering or that clicking noise?

I know how to do it while importing single pieces of data from a server-side page, but wanted to know if you could refresh the whole thing in one.

I wouldn't have thought so. You'd need to write a function responsible for updating all of the dynamic areas on a page and call that.
