Basic PHP: what does this "->" mean?

is this just another way to define variables?

The -> is for when referring to methods and/or subclasses in Object Oriented Programming.

You are right, it's also a type of variable definition.

If using wrapper classes, you need to use $this-> to access the variables in the base class.
