Brand New To It All...

I am new to programming, other than a very basic knowledge of HTML. I'm interested in webdesign and I have a few questions.
What languages would it be best to learn? and Is there any books or websites you'd recommend?

Thanks in Advance,
Nick

HTML then CSS for starters.

Then depending on your strengths and what you prefer: PHP/MySQL, Flash or Javascript.

Once you have a skill sussed start right away on the next - the bigger the toolbox the better the pay - the web field pays developers more than designers on the whole - someone who can do both well, is a sort after commodity

Glad you've got my back.

Also, I can't stress enough the importance of actually learning the languages and not "learning Dreamweaver" (or whatever WYSIWYG editor is around). You'll have a much better idea of what you're actually doing and get better results (from a technical standpoint) every time.

Unless you think a piece of software is smarter than you are - then you might look into a career at McDonald's.

I completely agree, it's always nice to know how something works and what it is doing when you're making it.
So far I have had great success on HTML Dog, I've gone through the HTML and CSS beginners guide.
