I don't know why you suggested 350.
300 is fine for print. esp postcards.
unless people bring their own microscopes

300 dpi definitely. It's gonna be a big file indeed, if you do the job in Photoshop. InDesign is better for these kind of jobs, because you have more control over colors, dpi, formats, etc... But it's a personal choice ;-)

It useless to use a million dpi when your printer's machine can only handle 200. It's better to check with the printer.

300dpi is the usual resolution.

Our printers can handle a bit more than 350 dpi and insane dpi for lineart.

Would it not depend on the detail in the image? For fine art asforementioned I'd even suggest going as far as 600dpi.

if the artwork was printed onto a pdf file using acrobat (resulting in a oddly smaller file size), will it affect the quality of the print?

Depends on what setting you're distilling it at. I am assuming that you are printing as a ps then using Distiller.

A Postscript file - something with .eps on the end!

Oh dear, it's back to basics but that's what we're here for.

300 dpi is more than enough for a friggin' flyer printed on recycled bog paper, for Crine out loud.

Thats encapsulated postscript - used to exhange raster and vector graphics between programs usually. Simple PostScript file ends with a .ps . You will have to Print to this file and you are able to make a PDF out of it if you have Acrobat pro installed that includes Distiller. Dont forget to add bleed !
