Pantone Swatches

Ok I did a quick search of the forum and couldn't find much, although I'm sure I missed a huge thread, but could someone fill me in on why you need the 4-Color Process Guide if you have the Color Bridge swatches?

I just bought the essentials kit and have been using Color Bridge (and the Formula Guides for colors not in the bridge for obvious reasons) but I'm a bit confused on what all the swatches are doing... Well mostly just the 4-Color.

Thanks!

The purpose of a 4-colour CMYK guide is to show the difference between process printing and spot colours. I normally use this when designing logos etc - I choose a spot colour which will convert quite well to CMYK and this guide is a good form of reference...

but isn't this what Color Bridge does? It provides the CMYK equivalent right beside the Spot color...

no, the color bridge displays the process color right next to the spot color, and then lists what the closest CMYK equivalent is underneath it, it's kind of a tricky layout that makes it look like that's the CMYK color.

hmmm Thanks! So the CMYK value that is written, it is that same as the process colour that is printed? or and I terribly misunderstanding this?

Yes.

And if you want to see it on your monitor, you'll have to have a special bit of code called a profile installed in the program you are using (e.g. Photoshop) to convert the nice bright RGB colours you see on-screen to the disappointing drab colours you will see in print!

haha good old monitor calibration. I have Pantone's Huey, which I suppose should help a bit.

Thanks for your responses everyone.

Also, just for reference, found a great video on YouTube that explains the whole essentials kit. See: YouTube - Pantone Essentials
