what does it depend on? Do they just tell me: "Hey muthafucka, Im from bronx and I want you to reduce your black ink coverage, yo!" or there is some other nifty stuff hiding?

It depends on the printing press - like you said, 280% is about the usual maximum, but some places (like Edita) have their system set up in such a way that 240% max looks better. Different inks, different papers, absorption, dot gain - aargh! Who can ever know what % will work?

What have you been snorting?!

Haha this thread has made me realise how little I know about print. I just bang any old shit in thee and ship it off to the printers. Although I do tend to use .psd files, never even touched ink levels.

Meh you're a designer not an artworker, its useful to know how some of the heavy technical side sometimes but not crucial. Plus I've been doing print based stuff for like three years including a fair bit of taking to artwork level and this is first I've come across ink levels either

Didn't even notice it being mentioned either at first mmm oblivious.
