I was wondering if anybody has bought any good design books recently. The only recent purchase I have made is that 55 degrees north It has some quality artwork in it.

What have you bought?

not really a 'design book' but it's related... I got myself yet another book about symbols:
"Signs, Symbols and Ciphers, Decoding the Message" (Georges Jean, Thames and Hudson)
I collect books about visual symbols, signs, etc... I also find it useful for 'constructing' icons... illustration in general...

I enjoyed it.
It gave me a lot of confidence because Hilman Curtis came from a non design background like myself and inspired to become better and worry about a piece of paper saying design degree. Also some great stuff about designers block.

I just order these two today aswell:-

That's because his "corporate" site is about as accessible as Osama Bin Laden's bedroom!

I think some of the vitriol (from myself amongst others) was a factor of his perceived status as a "web design guru" when a lot of his "web" work is uninspiring, inaccessible, and derivative.

His motion graphics work, on the other hand, is often very innovative and exciting.

Unfortunately for Mr Curtis' standing within our particular clique / bitchy design enclave, the majority of people here-abouts are more interested in the day-to-day reality of being a much less famous web designer and creating interesting and functional web pieces on a significantly more pedestrian budget, rather than indulgent and expensive mega-corporate motion or advertising work, and therefore Mr Curtis has little relevance, whereas the likes of Messers Zeldman, Meyer, and (dare I even utter it) Nielsen may have a little more currency.

Just my 2p as usual...

The books still good, even though i don't agree with cuttings corners during content layout by using gifs (not mentioned in the book by the way).

The books about attitude and inspiration its really good.
