Pc grinding to a halt

I have to do an A1 poster in 300dpi, trying to do it in Photoshop and pc has slowed to snails pace, not sure if Ill be able to get it done.
Is there a better way ? Mac people said it will be the same on a mac.

how are your scratch disks set up.

do the file at 72dpi until its approved then rework artwork at 300dpi - faster in long run

its a 2.8ghz p4 , 1gb ddr ram - brand new dell.
scratch disk set to 1500mb

cant really do it at 72dpi - its a poster for a pub with loads of bitmap images of their dishes.

well theres your problem. Ideally you should have 5 - 10 times your file size in ram. Get yourself a good magazine and a cup of coffee, it'll be a long day

TRY WORKING AT 250dpi - more that enough for print might speed it up slightly

When I used to work in repro (few years back now) posters were very rarely done at actual size, and more often than not were scaled up either by factors of 2 (for A2/A1 posters) or 4 (pop-up stands etc)...

If it's being printed digitally on an inkjet, the difference in quality mightn't be noticed... Check with whoever is gonna print it and see what they say.

Try to do as much as possible in Illustrator/Quark/Freehand too... vectors are so much more processor-friendly than bitmaps...

Hope that helps,
Phil

You could do all your layout n stuff in illustrator tho...just use photoshop for the photo manips you need to do...? Be amazed how much time you'd save simply by doing that...
