quark nightmare
ok few questions if anyone can help...? i've got an epson R1800 1. When i print from quark, eps's come out in some kind of preview pixelated mode 2. Most of the text doesn't print at all 3. Is it true that if i don't flatten TIFF files it could cause problem, if so, what will happen? 4. Shall i give up and use InDesign I've been reading about PostScript or something, god knows, doesn't seem to be an idiots guide anywhere to help me out (as i am an idiot), can anyone suggest anything? Thanks in advance... |

1. Is that a postscript printer? 2. Have you set the text in the EPS file? (refer to above). 3. If your layered TIFFs separate correctly then I would assume they are okay to use. 4. I would probably read up on the basics of Quark before giving up and switching to InDesign - especially since you would have already spent nion a grand for the software(?) |

create the simplest doc possible... reduce as many variables as possible. You're printing from a very simple set-up. Anything you can flatten or even export as a tiff and import into Quark (with a clipping mask if you need a transparent background) is going to make things easier. Those little epson's have trouble with EPS/vector files. Check all your printing preferences-make sure everything is set at high resolution output. Make sure OPI includes EPS images box is checked in the printing options. |

hi cheers for your help... still not sure why i can't just press file > print and it comes out of my printer lol... seems bizarre you have to know how to code in postcript to be able to do it...(or whatever its for) you spend a grand on quark for professional print jobs, but you can't print anything... sorry i know im obviously thick :-) im pretty sure the epson r1800 isnt postcript, i've been reading about GhostScript?? i installed it but nothing happened :-) anyone use it? software rips can solve the problem, but it's basically doing a similar job to pdf then print (interpreting the postcript information), and it'll cost you. I had mixed results with an Epson one a while back, bought it for colour matching as much as anything, but they didn't support that for my printer. Cocks. |

Stickmus - did you stick with your Epsom? or get a different printer in the end? |

You spend a grand on Quark for exactly what you said... 'professional print jobs' :-) The average professional printer set-up for even just printing color flats (used for proofing) cost around 24x what you probably paid for your epson... :-) Just for the US market, there are a few dozen programs commonly used by the average home user, on two different platforms, all constantly being updated, and software developers... well they're all over the place. There are quite a few variables that go into making the home printer streamline or even just functional. Now take into account the number of markets Epson is producing for and the incredible speed with which their industry is advancing... my point being: make your docs as simple as possible. and don't expect too much out of your lil' epson... it's tryin the best it can. :-)! |

and not to mention the most complex of all the considered variables, being the actual methods of execution -- production techniques (seemingly infinite), extensions, multi-application workflow and doc format... with almost nothing clearly defined by a set protocol... it really is kinda crazy. |

How are you checking your colours? Have you set your monitor up properly? What settings have you got for colour management in the printer drivers? Quote:
Yeah, we didn't have the money to invest in anything else. You learn to work with what you've got. |
