Thinking about getting a camera to take a few shots here and there. Anyone recommend a decent camera that will get the job done. One that takes hi-res photos but nothing TOP of the line. something affordable say around 150~250 USD? Cheers.

for the top end of ur budget...well a little over 280 u could have urself a nikon d40 slr, well woth saving the extra pennies for a proper camera methinks

I think the OP budgeted up to $250 USD. If this is the case, I'd go the cannon route. I've had many Canon point and shoots and have loved them.

However, I have the Nikon d40 and its picture quality blows my other cameras away. It isn't nearly as portable though. If portability doesn't matter to you, I'd save up and get the d40.

I really like the Ricoh GR series. you can pick up the GR 1 for 160 on ebay. Maybe a touch expensive, but it's a nice camera to get ceative with.

Yeah portablility I could care less about. I was looking at the Nikon D40 and it seems amazing, although you said ~$280? I looked around and said that it's around $499?

Maybe somewhere else?

I just got a d40, and had a play with it this weekend. For a beginner (such as myself) I feel it's a great camera, nice colours and lots of options. Not very portable and probably not within budget (mine was about 400 euros I guess), but great nevertheless.

Canon Rebel XT's can be had for around $450 now - maybe if you wait and save... That's probably without a lens but it does get you a start in the world of DSLR.

If you don't mind buying used try ebay for a Canon 10D or 20D. 10D's can be picked up with a lens in your price range and if you get hooked you can buy more glass as you need it and upgrade your body if need be in the future.

as seen.to said, I'd suggest saving up and going for a DSLR, once you start playing with it you'll be in love and splurging on lenses before you know it.

Been browsing around the internet, read about DSLR which I am going to get vs a point and shoot. But just out of curiosity: why do you all recommend the Nikon D40 vs the Canon Digital Rebel XT. Canon sells it for cheaper + has 10.1 Megapixels to it. although I did read megapixels aren't everything.

Just some questions.
