I also do print work so I'm interested to know if the cam can produce crisp, clear images suitable for A4 output at print resolutions (ideally without interpolation/guestimation).

I'm on the lookout for a digital camera, but I'm not particularly savvy about them. From what I've seen and heard 4-5mp+ might be the minimum I'd require for my needs.

If anyone knows differently, your advice is v welcome.

Depends on what exactly you wanna do with it; print res, etc. If you're wanting hi-res images to print then you'd probably be better of going for a high pixel count (6-8mp). But dont just buy on pixel count as image quality is just as (if not more) important. If your camera takes shit pictures then it take shit pictures.

A good 3.x megapixel image will easily blow up to a very, very good 8x10 print,a very good 10x12 and with a bit of careful photoshop-ery you can get an acceptable print up to about A3 (much lower res obviously but as with most printing the bigger the print the lower the res). Obviously things like printer quality and type, stock, print res etc come into play.

Dont forget that only a few years ago 3mp was as high as many professional cameras went, it was as adequate for full bleed, high gloss magazine covers back then as it is now. Just give you a little less room for error (cropping etc).

But, If you want the best image quality go for a dSLR and work in a Raw (using photoshop CS) as it offers a much higher level of image correction than jpeg, tiff etc
