Beginner's Camera

I'm quite new to photography and at the moment I have been using a standard 7.5 Pentax digital camera, nothing fancy. I'm really enjoying photography and I want to take it to the next level so I decided I would like to purchase a digital SLR camera.

My max budget is around £600. Can anyone recommend a camera to buy?

Not putting you down or anything, Liam, and it's great that you're getting serious about photography but it seems to me that we have this thread about every 5 weeks. Check out what you can find by using Search!

Liam,

Take a look at the Nikon D40. There is the D40x which is a slightly updated version (has 10mp) but it's about another 150 quid odd and you don't get much else additional. You could buy a couple of lenses or a flash gun with the extra.

Alternatively, you could do what I did and get a used Nikon D70s off ebay for around 300 quid and get a couple of lenses.

Cheers Coops, now I just need a better camera. Where would be the cheapest place to buy a camera? I dont want a secondhand camera so ebay is out of the question.

Thanks!

Dunno mate, but if I was you I'd find the model you want and do a kelkoo or pricerunner on the old interweb.

Cheers dpc036 I will have a look at that camera too. Has anybody used both the Canon EOS 400 and the Nikon D40 and could give a comparison?

Cheers Coops, the D40 is looking like the winner at the moment but I need to check out some more reviews and see if there are any alternatives.

The main difference between the d40 and the 400d is that the 400d has better high iso perfomance. AND with canon you have the most adaptable lens mount out there. AKA you have the ability to mount pentax screwmount lenses (the smc takumars are insane), contax yashica lenses, and many zeiss lenses made in the m42 mount as well, AND any nikon lens, all via an adaptor. Something to consider.

d40 would be a better choice. low price, it also comes with a pretty nice kit lens. no need for a d40x
