Add Wi-Fi To Your Digital Camera

This looks like a must-have piece of gear for your SD-supported digital camera:

Review: Eye-Fi Adds Wi-Fi to Almost Any Digital Camera

I'm starting my Crimbo list with this.

So let me get this straight - if you're not in the range of your wireless network, you can't store any data on the actual camera?

Still, this would be really handy for pro photographers with a studio.

it does say it's a 2GB card too. would be ace if you could go out snapping and when you get home it automatically grabs theimages from the camera without you having to do anything!

That's pretty cool. Wonder if they do a compact flash version.

Meh - sounds like another technological breakthrough which no-one wants, no-one needs.
I'd want complete control over which shots get automatically downloaded for my Picasa photo system to display to the entire household.

I definitely want one of these for Crimbo. If you're worried, surely you can devote a folder for new photos to beam to before they are shared.

steve, you mention Picasa and complete control in the same sentence...I spent a week re-organizing my photos after that shit software mucked up my folder structure. That was an early version, but I've never gone back since...

Really? Sounds very odd. The whole idea of Picasa is that you can leave all your folders wherever they happen to be and Picasa finds them all.

Yeah! I can upload a whole 1mb per second! That means a 11mb raw will preview in just under 15 seconds!

Seriously. This needs a bit more sophisticated technology to be really useful. In 15 seconds, I could take the card out of my camera and plug it into some card reader and have it up on my screen...

agreed - It'd have to be SUPER fast - a single 10mb Nikon Raw file would take ages to pipe over wifi.

I think the point though is that you don't actually really have to do anything. You don't have to get out a cord or drop it in the cradle, you can just go out, shoot some shots, and then come home and turn on your camera and it will upload itself to your computer. Large sized RAW files may take a lot longer to download, but I don't think that the professional photographer is their target on this one. They are going for the average 'I wanna be wireless everything' early 21st century person, and that person is most likely to be carrying a compact camera. So for them, coming home and turning on the camera and then wandering away and doing something else while their pictures are uploading is probably pretty appealing.

Its almost appealing to me actually - I hate getting out the cord for my camera!

For your average shmuck computer / digital camera user (not you nerds), this thing is perfect. I can't tell you how many times I've had to explain to Grandma (and the like) "copy" + "paste" to LEAVE the photos on your camera and make a copy of them on your machine. "Cut" + "paste" to REMOVE them from your camera and ONLY have them on your computer. I want to get all the non-tech-savvy family members of mine -- and that's most of them -- one of these if it's at least to help with one technical aspect of their lives. They all have digital cameras, and I hate to visit and have to help them organize photos still on their cards from the crazy Halloween party in 2004.

FWIW, I just realized I never posted up the official site: Eye-Fi
