one that comes to mind:

http://www.onemanseye.com/
(dhtml or flash options)

Worth sifting through the usual suspects (linkdup/styleboost/…)

Admittedly it only seems to function fully in MSIE5/Mac (the dhtml menu dis'nay work in Safari), but I thinks it's pretty neato.
Good bit of clean design.

Worth checking out in MSIE if you're trawling for inspiration.

(didn't crash either Safari or MSIE5/Mac for me)

Me neither, and it is very nice... pretty much the smae as the flash version in most respects. Very nicely done.

This site was built in 1999 and it continues to look good today...it's a model of simplicity and it still stands up if you ask me - how many other sites from back then would fare the same? To be honest I thought it was one of the best examples of online design that I'd seen back then.

Fair enough, the dhtml is a bit dodgy and will probably break mozilla/nutscrape/etc, but the flash version still works fine...I guess there's a lesson in there somewhere

In terms of other artist/photography portfolios go and have a look at Adopt for some great examples (mostly flash again though...hmmm).

http://www.gdelin.com/

Nice and simple and some good shots to boot. Just a pity about the initial roll over image load, bulks up the time on a 56k. In fact it might be worth skipping it and going straight to

Thinking as I type again...

Mine? http://petemc.net It has Flash but only because I wanted to have some nice slideshows with music, but the site is all HTML and the slideshows are there if you want to view them, they're not shoved down your throat
