I never noticed a problem with it over the past year, however the last few months the auto-focus hasn't been working.

It makes a stupid little squeaking noise, as if its straining to take the photo.

I've tried resetting all settings back to default without any luck.

There is no auto-focus indicator coming on within the viewfinder.

Hopfully its just my error here and not the camera itself.

I have never been able to take close-ups simply because it never focuses properly.

Mine does exactly the same.
(it began after I dropped it accidentally...)

i too have a nikon d50 and have been experiencing the exact same problems! Plus, it decides when to take the photos and when not to. If the lighting isn't deemed good enogh, it won't take the photo. What gives???

Are you using auto-ISO? if so the "film speed" is being forced upward by too fast a shutter speed or two small an aperture.

Try using S or A mode with a fixed ISO.

i believe my problem is with the lens.. My friend who also has a D50 swapped lenses with me, and it worked fine. And when he used mine, he had the same problem. So i'll have to use the warranty and get a new lens i guess...

I had similar problems with a D70 I had. It did not like my older Nikon lenses that I had used with my F4. Not sure how strong the D50 auto focus motors are but I'd say that once you rule out that its not the camera, you could try one the new Auto Focus assist lenses that have their own drives built in. They are super fast as well. Pricey investment but they will be a perfect combo if you ever upgrade to a newer body. Hope this helps.
