depends what you are gonna use the scans for.. cheap neg scanners are normally crap... but if you are only gonna be print 8 by 10's then the epson one is fine. I used to have a mega Nikon one but sold it when i moved. . . |

Strange you should ask - today was the day I finally got round to scanning some 28 year old negatives on my CanoScan LiDE 500F scanner, bought last summer after a very favourable review in the press. The results can be seen here: (Nástup means Enter) splash |

Ha! They're not very expensive, are they? I think I paid about 150€ for mine at a discount store. It was actually the nega scanning capability that I was after. I've got literally thousands of negs which I've never had printed, many of them over a quarter of a century old, and seeing my better shots after all this time is great! So I won't be swapping, sorry! |

Great! Any good pubs round your way? ;-) Don't you get sick of the tourists traipsing up and down outside all day and most of the night? Andy - if unis are anything like businesses, their equipment will be outdated, dirty, misused and unavailable. Get your own and be happy! |

IMHO flatbeds like the Epsons are quite good for MF, but just don't cut it for 35mm. At college you should hopefully get access to something like a flextight. Medium format really looks best on a flextight or drum. However I do use the Epson 4870 for my portfolios (marginally acceptable for 645 and quite good for 6x7 and above). For 35mm I recommend the Minolta Scan Elite 5400, I'm happy with this for 16x20 prints (or larger) and submit to stock agencies using this scanner. If you were mainly going to do MF, then something like the Epson might be the best compromise if you are going to get your hands on decent scanning hardware at Uni. Epson flatbeds and the Minolta should be inexpensive to pick up on Ebay. |
