Camera

I'm looking to get a cheapish but good digital camera to take with me to Canada this summer - any thoughts? I'm on as low a budget as possible but i'd like something with a bit of character, something that i can muck around with shutter speeds and stuff on. I was going to get a lomo but digital is probably a better option for holiday snaps.

my developer got one of these and I'm pretty impressed with it - I don't know much about cameras, but the prints have come out beatifully:

Lomo would be a bad choice for a primary camera, as you're pretty much limiting yourself to one particular style of image. Besides, you can fake the 'lomo effect' pretty convincingly in Photoshop - there's a few tutorials about if you check on google.

I've got a Canon IXUS 50 as a compact travel camera.
Can't fault image quality or user interface. Best purchase of 2005.

This'll sound daft, but can you muck around with shutter speeds on cameras like that?

Apparently, shutter speed on the IXUS can be set between 15 to 1/2000 seconds.
Can't say I've needed to use/find it yet though.

Originally had the ixus 500, got knicked.

Bought the ixus 50, got knicked (twice!) (i love insurance!)

Just got a shiny new ixus 65 and it is awesome! Very quick when taking shots. You don't get full control of aperture and shutter speed with it, but there are ways to either speed up or slow down the shutter (depending on what you want to do). You're definatly right though Subcircle, image quality is amazing, and the interface takes about 10 minutes to pick up!

can get photo's like...

I've done a little review of it, if anyone wants a read, lemme know, i'll pass on a link. Don't want to make it look like i'm advertising one of my sites!

I've got a Panasonic FZ30, bit big for holiday, but having had a go with one this weekend I would recommend it's little brother the FZ7. Similar features, same lens, similar CCD but much smaller overall.

When you are done researching, consider that it is probably cheaper to actually buy when you arrive, what with prices of everything in Britain being a rip-off an' all that.
