[ot] Now I'm not a violent man by nature, but I personally would take great delight in beating seven shades of the sh*t out of Chris Moyles (R1 DJ). How anyone can even stand to be in his company without twatting the bloke in the head is beyond me. [/ot] |

I actually think that was one of his weakest pieces, especially when placed next to his work for Björk, Aphex Twin and Autechre. Mind you, I also feel that Come On My Selector is one of Squarepusher's weaker moments. (I have a soft spot for 'Tundra') |

hmmm now i'd definitely disagree with you there - the Selector video works so tightly with the music, something that mr C himself has admitted he has been striving for throughout his career. I think it was in a Creative Review piece on it they asked - what came first, the video or the track?_Kinda sums it up i feel. The Bjork vid pales into comparison imo. As for weakest pieces - His Jesus Jones vid has gotta be a contender. Cant say i ever got into squarepusher tho. |

I just found the video to look too much like it was done by someone totally new to direction, by which I mean that it lacked visual ideas. The quick cuts do work with the track, but then locking the direction concept and shot durations so rigidly to that kind of rapid, cut-up music isn't exactly thinking outside the box. I feel that more imagination went into the other vids I mentioned and went a bit further than simply having a fat, bald bloke chasing a young girl and a dog around a stylistically non-descript building with some token trendwhore 'pooter graphics thrown in for good measure. A feeble attempt at a Manga reference that simply doesn't work conceptually or visually, imho. That being said, I'm no major fan of Squarepusher either. I feel the D'n'B* ruined some good freeform jazz at the time and only makes their music sound more dated now. Just albums I picked up along the way. ...though they do have their moments (re: Tundra) Perhaps Cunningham works best when he's working with musicians that have their own independance and 'eccentricities'. |
