Does anyone enjoy listening to radio anymore?

ok... growing up, I used to listen to the radio all the time. Of course considering my age... it was FM that I listened to. I had a heavy metal show that used to come on a college radio station that I never missed... they played some of the best metal during the time and most couldn't be found on MTV or even their "Headbanger's Ball". I also enjoyed Rockline and a few other shows. Plus, I love the company of the DJ's as I drifted to sleep most nights. It was as if i had someone in my lonely dark room with me and it was comforting. I had tapes, records and a few CD's then I listened to but radio was the majority of my listening.

now, at ripe age of 30, I find myself listening to radio very seldom. I listen to my collection of 1700 mp3 on my computer at work (radio doesn't come in well here in our building). I listen to CD's and mp3's in my car when traveling and only turn on radio when I am tired of my traveling music collection. At home I have over 500 CD's I choose from as well as more mp3's. On a rare instance, I sometimes turn on streaming internet radio through the computer and listen to it.

I have become bored with radio I think. In our area, we really don't have a lot to choose from when searching for radio stations compared to larger cities. Plus the music selection is basically all gone to top 40 lists per genre. I can't stand those stations that rotate the same top 40 list over and over throughout the day... had to work at stereo install place listening to one of those stations day in and day out. I got tired of hearing the same pop song (which was souless and cookie cutter anyhow) that must have been repeated 3-6 times per work day. The other alt. rock and rock stations seemed to follow same ideas before long and only played what was currently popular with less repitition.

So now I can choose the 80's stations, 2 classic rock stations, 1 modern rock station, the rap stations (which are now more abundant than any other stations as they follow the trends of listeners) and the ever so delightful country stations (which are not much different than the top 40 pop stations IMHO), a few classical stations and etc. It seems there is a lot of good music that is not being played on the air because it doesn't fit into one of the marketing demographics which these stations study and follow as their guide to entertainment. Thus my lack of radio support and listening as I grow older. Its a shame really.

I do like some of the new internet based radio stations I have found though and this is my best way to fill in that loss of what radio once was I think. Not quite the same but at least my region doesn't determine what I should hear.

so has anyone else noticed this trend in radio listening over the years?

I've just bought an oldish Denon tuner to add to my main hifi so no doubt my radio listening will increase (I've got digital radio via our free to air digital tv service but the bit rate is low and it sounds crap (thats another rant for another day))

I'm a big fan of Xfm, a London based not-too-mainstream station (poor quality internet stream available) but even that gets a little predictable after repeated listening. I also think Radio 4 is superb.

xfm is great, along with club977 when you fancy some of those 80's hits!

Winamp has a few good stations to browse through I find

Get a DAB tuner and listen to BBC6, it's really good.

radio 4 really gets on my tits. In fact, it drives me a bit mentalist.

talking of radio there's a good documentary on Nick Drake online if anyone's into his stuff.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/r2music/...ies/nickdrake/

presented by Brad Pitt of all people.
Nick Drake is quality though.
