It is quite possibly the most popular form of predominantly 'instrumental' music in today's society. I think the reason that techno/electronica/... is most popular is that is feeds into extra-curricular social activities much more strongly than other similar music form. I feel that my personal preference for electronica/glitch/neo-classic is partially the result of it being easy to work to- it's stimulating without being distracting. Vocal tracks (i.e. vocal frequencies) generally occupy a part of the audio spectrum that trigger a higher state of attention. This is my educated guess as to why instrumental tracks are the most popular kind of music in concentrated work environments such as design studios. It's an extention of the principle that tell us why instrumental music is more popular in restaurants, etc... settings. Instrumental music clashes less with conversation in those environments and will not trigger the hightened state of attention as our brains struggle to subconciously listen to the words when 'songs' are played quietly in the background. I could be talking pants, of course, but the logic seems sound (pardon the pun). Last edited by Bill Posters : 22-10-2003 at 11:06. |

yep , I'd agree with that. Another good music is drum and bass - not the roudy over the top stuff but the more intelligent side like LTK Bukem, Some Roni Size & Goldie's stuff especially like from his timeless albulm. ..................

personally i hate techno and industrial, i cant see the point in it. i know its narrow minded but its just got no soul in it. btw i think chris cunningham did the unkle video "rabbit in your headlights" and it ruled, he is very talented. also to who was thinkin bout Boards of canada, (i cant be bothered to look as i am in this window now) get on it, they are real nice. |

No soul? Depends on what kind of soul you're looking for. I'm not looking for blues and gospel here. Try listening to some classic Skinny Puppy, there's enough emotion and pain in those to qualify as 'soul' I would think. We're not looking at touchy-feely 'lawd, my life dun gone so wrong' kind of soul... but more the 'life is unfair, look at the suffering' kind perhaps. It's all up to taste I guess. I have no problems with GOOD music, and I listen to all kinds (no country or rap please). =) If I want some soul... I throw in some Richard Ashcroft... if he's not singing about some love he's lost, it's about how high he was when he lost that love... 'lord... I've been trying... trying to keep, myself from cryin...' sing it Richard. hehe Last edited by Bill Posters : 22-10-2003 at 11:07. |

mate it aint gonna happen, and i know its narrow minded, it just cant hack it. we agree though, i hate country, but i like rap, not bling bling puff daddy shit. shit but hip hop artsits like DJ Krush, DJ shadow, blackalicious, quannum, jurassic 5, RJD2 etc. thats my bag. that stuff your talking about, Skinny Puppy etc. is it fast paced beats, i think its that that gets me, that inane bump bump bump. although i do like some of the chillout stuff (although that might be seen as lame to a pure tech head) and Boards of canada have elements of industrial sounds but at about 90 bpm, not 190! guess i just like life in the slow lane....each to their own. |

What i cant stand is RnB gahhhhh!!!! its seems everyone on these pop star programs wants to be Nelly or Craig David or some other wailing fool. It might be just be that thinks its all very unoriginal and generic though. |

I just have a very low tolerance for rap, and granted there are some really good artists in that genre... but it just isnt for me. =) Such is the bonus behind the massive amounts of musical styles available these days, there's something to inspire anyone. I know we've all been stuck on some project sometime in our careers, and didn't know what to do... that one song comes on... and it can spark even the slightest idea, doesn't matter how small, but it can make a world of difference. Design is such a wonderful thing. |

Rap - a musical form laid low by "beeeatch ho mo-fo" low-brow lyrics from a large chunk of current performers. Much as Eminem may be a knob, his lyrics are actually pretty good if you actually try to listen to them fully. Personally if I was going to listen to rap, I'd start off with almost anything from the "Ghost Dog" soundtrack (very very cool film!). Or maybe The Streets for that UK thing. Still, I normally go for ambient, chilled Ibiza stlye stuff (TM), or light clasical for designing, Industrial for getting shit out of my system and driving fast, and almost anything by Apollo 440 for getting me bouncing round like a 6 year old who just drank a litre of neat Kia-Ora (try their tunes on either the Lost in Space or Charlies Angels sountracks for 120MPH motorway inspiration... if you're on the Autobahn, obviously...not the M1 of course... |

have to agree with you there, eminem's lyrics are great and so is the backing music by Dr Dre- very experienced producer. The streets are very good but I wouldnt say they are designing music, some of his lyrics are pretty funny ..................

It's a conspiracy against you herb... I know you were planning on ousting me from my throne of total world domination... I must find a way to curb your thirst for global control... and what better way than by having you unknowingly knock the form of music you love so dearly!! MWAHAHAHA!!! ok... megalomaniacal raving mode = off |

tunes
what a range of tunage we have. I'm definitely into my Mark B & Blade, DJ Shadow, Roots, Jurassic 5, Herbaliser, Dilated Peoples etc. But at work I don't always have a choice. Today I have been listening (not by choice) to: Simon & Garfunkel Dean Martin - well amusing live performance Hawkwind - lasted 30 seconds before being removed, thank f#ck Punjabi MC - doing my nut in A load of mexican music - played to death Rage Against The Machine (cannot beat Rage) Lemon Jelly - quality In betwen CD's I'm enjoying the Listen Again feature on Radio 1's site, means I can listen to Giles Peterson in daylight! |
