I do games too...

I'm currently working on music for a video game. It's a 2D shooter being developed by a very small studio called FreeMinds. The game is codenamed S.T.E.P.

I can't tell you much more about the game yet because it's still being developed, but I'd like to get some feedback on some of the music (and hopefully a little jealous admiration wink.gif) from you all.

These are two of the tracks I've completed so far.

The first is a fairly short and slow techno loop; a potential song for the credits.

Invasion

The second is a longer and more epic, rock tinged track, which we're possibly going to be using for the intro/main menu.

The Fate Of The World Lies In Your Car Mounted Super Cannon

So give them a wee listen and tell me what you think.

Cheers!

The first one ("Invasion") is very retro - almost C64ish, and I liked it a lot. So much so that I listened to it several times. I felt that the first few bars before the bass line comes in was quite reminiscent of Final Fantasy.

The second one: I wasn't so fond of the intro, and then the beat started and I liked it, but then when the vaguely middle-eastern sounding tune came in I slightly lost interest again.

I hear you on the Eastern sounding bit. I'm thinking of redoing that part in a manner more fitting with the intro key.

I'm glad you liked Invasion.

I'm no expert, but that sounds like it would work a lot better to me.

Indeed. It's a great tool and for free you couldn't ask for more.

Nice one! I'm no musician but I love fucking around on Garageband. Do you use real instruments with it? I always fancied getting a keyboard plugged in and arsing around with some cheesy tunes.

The only real instruments I use are my guitar and bass, which I plug into a bass overdrive pedal, a bass amp, and then into the audio input on the iMac. It works a treat, but mostly I just use the built-in instruments (and the Jam Packs) with the musical typing.

A mate of mine has a proper midi synthesizer for his but I've yet to hear anything that he's made with it.

Excellent! I reckon we should start a Garageband thread and get people to submit their tunes...

Yours are good by the way mate. I like the retro 'Invasion' - as Hunch says, very C64ish. In a good way, of course.

Like the tunes, quite complex rhythm and harmonies. Maybe a bit of bitcrush would be nice to get the 12 bit game sounds.

Cheers nini. I've experimented with the bitcrusher and too much just sounds a bit messy to be honest.
