Not shocking news, Reznor's rage against the industry that made him the multi-millionaire he now is, is pretty well known. He was telling people to steal NIN CDs during an Australian tour. The irony of these two massive artists rebelling against the industry and giving music away seems to be lost on most people. How are they recording this music? In massive studios funded by the success gained from commercial sales. Are they holding down day jobs to fund their art? No. Just as democracy gives people the freedom to demonstrate against the government, so the capitalist music industry has given the winners the freedom to demonstrate against the evil middleman. Not that I think selling music for £8 a CD is right, but you have to look at things realistically. unconsolidated isoparms

What they are against is the stranglehold record companies have on artists and their output - what it shows is that record 'deal' is not needed for the distribution of music - the model will have to change (but that's been obvious for years). There is an element of biting the hand that feeds you, but obedience for the sake of the status quo is worse |
