Rap on the wane
Can this be true? Over the past twenty years we've heard rap degenerate from an interesting side-shoot of house/techno which was still recognizable as mainstream music to the present toneless, ultra-repetitive monotony. Sales of rap albums have slumped in the United States, with many listeners tiring of the genre's sexism, racism, materialism and violence. Not one rap album made the top ten of US bestsellers in 2006, with overall sales down 33 per cent. "The public has made a choice," said iconic rapper KRS-One. (Sunday Telegraph) I hope something even more mind-numbing isn't replacing it. My free fonts www.utfi.net

The reason Hip-Hop sales are down is because its possible for people to pick and choose which songs they want to buy instead of having to buy the whole album. Artist continue to put out cd's with 3-4 good singles on it and the rest are just there as fillers. It's not becuase of sexism, rascism etc... |

Just bought the Blackstar (Mos Def & Talib Kweli) cd today; havent given it a proper listening but ive heard good things about it. Check out: MySpace.com - Free Speech - Los Angeles - Hip Hop / Rap - www.myspace.com/freespeech He's a hip-hop artist and most of his stuff is available free for download; Laffy Taffy Rots your teeth is definatly worth a download and he just came out with another cd on tuesday, The Brekfast Club EP; has a couple good songs on it but I havent given it a good listening yet. |

black star is a classic, one of the best albums in my collection, make sure you check out the Reflection Eternal album as well. rap/hip-hop has blown up like crazy the past year around here. There was always quite some interest in the commercial mainstream american rappers like dre, snoop and such but now the local dutch-rapping cats are getting some serious airplay. All the local chavs have finally picked up on some of the music I've been listening to for the past five years. There are some real gems in the american underground, still. Names like El-P, Atmosphere, most of the Stones Throw label and MF Doom are shit hot, innovative, experimental and fresh. Far from the unintelligent monotonous blingbling-yeeaah bullshit that's been out in the mainstream scene. |

Not sure about the US, but the UK is making its own in the form of Grime now, no need for the American import. Damned sight better it is too, I much prefer to listen to someone tell me about how they will merk me down Tescos than pop a cap in my ass fo' shizzle. unconsolidated isoparms

I have found some Grime wonders, a grime remix of Coldplay - spun a web one being the best so far. Common is good rap too, intelligent. Can't go far wrong with ATCQ really though, or Hieroglyphics. Pharcyde are amazing alzo. Last edited by pat : 01-09-2007 at 21:02. |
