Where to learn Motion Graphics
I currently have limited knowledge of motion graphics, but am very interested in the field. I would really like to create motion graphics for commercials, presentations, and (hopefully some day) movies. I am currently attending a community college and will have my AA in Media Arts and Technology by the end of the next semester, but would really like to branch out from the Web focused nature of the program my community college offers. Is there a good college in Southern California in this field? Is a college degree in this necissary? (I'm am fairly apt at learning on my own) |

Motion Graphics is normally taught within Graphic Design courses. You will need to find a college that have options to specialise in Motion Graphics. It is worth doing a course (i.e degree) as you won't have all the video/sound equipment. |

a couple of places
I like Cal Arts better than the art center at Pasadena only because it is less commercial. My favorite is School of Visual Arts in NYC because the students there are edgie, innovative and just plain brilliant. |

Ill never be able to afford a private art college like Cal Arts(which i was planning on going to at one point). Its somewhere around $120k to goto school for 4 years and half that for 2. I've heard that Cal State Long Beach has a good film department but I haven't looked into it. |

I still say if you want to pursue 2d motion graphics, get as much of as good a design school as you can afford. Even a year. I never went to design school, and felt handicapped. It took years and years to absorb a decent design esoteric. Maybe you should get into editing, which doesn't require the kind of eye it takes to be a first rate motion graphics artist. |

well i think you should get into a good institute who give importance to theory also. softwares are used but let me tell you a leading news paper article told that in animation 70% is creative and 30% is technology. So if you dnt have vast knowledge you cannot develop creative ideas and you will be blocked at one place Read articles, see a lot of good movies, classics by good award winning diretors. try to shoot movies like that and then analyse them, you will learn Regards Amitav Roy Web Design Mumbai, Graphic Design Mumbai, Navi Mumbai - Pixel Groups |

Hey, check out the Art Institutes website is AII(dot)edu, cant post links yet. But give them a look. I know they have a great Motion Graphic program and they have campus's all over the country. Not every campus offers every program. I know the Vegas campus offers Mograph, because I almost went there for it. But look at the location section and find the Cali campus, and look at their courses available. But also try to learn yourself. The colleges teach fundamentals, and I'm sure you will probably be well off going to school but you can absolutley start learning and producing great stuff now. Check out creativecow(dot)com and videocopilot(dot)net. Creative cow is a huge community of people, and some really great tutorials. Video Copilot is actually a guy that writes tutorials for creative cow, but its easier to find his tuts, by going to his site directly. And the tutorials he has been putting up recently are FANTASTIC! |
