Music copyright

Anybody had any experience getting copyright to use a bit of music in an online campaign? also if anybody knows any good music library resources that'd be good too

I'm sure it has always been using a track for anthing up to 30 seconds is legal - although I might be making that up!

Also, Digital Vision used to do some great royalty free audio - not sure if they still do since Getty bought them out a while ago

It's 28 seconds, anything more and you have to pay for it

I'm after a specific tune and have found out that the harry fox agency appears to grant license to use music in it's different forms (The music, not the performance), I will be using over 28 seconds and don't mind paying for a licence (so long as it's not silly money), was wondering if anyone had had to do this before?

In copyright law you are ok so long as you don't use a 'substantial piece' of the work, it's ok to stick a couple of pages from a book up online without permission, but not the whole book. Since there is no guidance for what constitutes a 'substantial piece' you get all these urban myths floating about

exactly, its never been tested in the courts, but would you want to be the person who provokes that test case?

contact the label the track is released on. they'll tell you who their person/company is in charge of licensing for whatever medium you want to use the music for.

beware - sometimes, different people have the rights to different regions (europe or usa).

How do you control the regional usage rights of a track for use on the web?

It's an old track that has been covered a few times, I'm not sure which label it belongs to and I don't need the performance copyright, I need the music copyright
