Can anybody recommend good tutorials for logo design and would you recommend illustrator or photoshop.

I don't think graphic design can be learned by passively watching a tut and I recommend a pencil and paper. The computer stage comes very much later.

id start by looking at the logo book, which contains thousands of logos that have stood the test of time.

Look it these in relation to how they are constructed and what makes a good logo

I do create ebook covers at the moment.

I would like to learn the software also. Yes I can come up with some good designs on pen and paper. Would like a few examples or tuts I can follow.

Yes I have searched google. nothing grabs me yet.

If a client has a really low budget I skip the pencil paper stage...not gonna lie.

I actually start on a computer and finish with charcoal on stone.

What I normally do is copy well known brands EG Coca Cola and mark them of as my own, nobody ever knows.

Write the name of the company out in helvetica bold, then take the Nike swoosh, turn it upside down and put it on top, works every time!

You can get an idea from your friends and if you want,if you can afford and enrolled in a tutorial class then it is better since there will be a professor that would teach you better or maybe study on your own with the help of books and live tutorial via youtube.

Those are just a few articles out there. Google "branding" and you'll find pages and pages of good results. It's just a matter of sifting through things. I highly advise you sign up on Behance.net and look through there for some examples of good branding. I can tell you my process for designing logo/identity (or the term most pros use — Branding) but I think it might be a little much since I don't know your clientele.

The tutorials is in your mind..use the softwares you feel more confortable to work on...theres no rule for that!
Look for logos design book, theres lot of examples you could analyse and study!
