★ Identity Design

Quite surprised there's not a thread already dedicated to this. (Well I couldn't see one so feel free to point it out and I'll merge.)

Thought this was interesting – up to 40,000 iterations made possible with an ever-mutating mark... still manages to be really strong though.

Clever.

it is an interesting approach but it completely contradicts with the whole idea of a brand

Who's idea? Yours? Or one you've read about? You comment sounds a little like kneejerk—the reconstituted.

I don't think it does at all. It's a coherent idea, delivered with confidence. The colour, style, type and application are mature examples of how to extend brand, not dilute it.

it has consistent recognisable elements across all it's mutations so I don't think recognition is a problem.

more brands should be like this, where they become a flexible identity system that can change depending on the application

The style, vintage type, is being done a LOT right now. However. These folks nail it on relevant projects. Others are just as nice.

This one's been doing the rounds for a few days.

More4 Rebrand | Projects | ManvsMachine

Lovely work - a completely new direction too which seem less and less common as boards squeeze out the really creative answers in favour for safer evolution led designs. Good stuff from both More4 and Man vs. Machine.

Via Giraffe. It's self congratulatory, but shows the progression of an idea nicely.

Something I noted on the Brand New blog where I pulled it from: the X doesn't perfectly bisect the C. Lord that irritates me greatly.

Only for process shorts like that one. It has nothing to do with actual logo design. What they didn't show you was the jackass sitting at his mac fucking around with the transparency panel.

Bit obtuse giraffe old boy. They probably created an incredibly detailed identity system with all that work (you'd hope). Guidelines, Ads, TV spots, Tone, Copy, Printed Collateral, vehicle wraps, signage, decals etc etc.

Haha, I'm just being cynical. The full post on Brand New shows lots of full developmental print tests; the final product isn't as nice as the development. The textures feel very rehashed and uninspired living in the shadow of the Aol. and Cartoon Network identities. Some of the execution is also just sloppy, i.e. the diagonal line mask, first column third row. And the camo treatment is dreadful to me.

The video doesn't do this justice, but about as nicer piece of signage as you'll ever see. Calling it signage doesn't do it justice either. Brilliant.
