I always start logos on paper, than reconstrukt them in Freehand, been using this app since version 3. Just love it, never managed to get used to Illustrator, but unfortunately the only thing with Macromedia products in general is the fact that Mac versions are so neglected... PC versions are better (I am a very disapointed Mac OS X user in general...) As I plan to switch to linux for next year, I have been looking at Sodipodi lately : http://www.sodipodi.com/ (taken for the Sodipodi site) : "What is Sodipodi? Sodipodi is a vector-based drawing program, like CorelDraw® or Adobe Illustrator® from the proprietary software world, and Sketch or Karbon14 from the free software world. It is free software, distributed under the terms of the Gnu General Public License, Version 2. Sodipodi uses W3C SVG as its native file format. It is therefore a very useful tool for web designers. It has a relatively modern display engine, giving you finely antialiased display, alpha transparencies, vector fonts and so on. Sodipodi is written in C, using the Gtk+ toolkit and optionally some Gnome or KDE libraries. Sodipodi works under most versions of Unix and Windows. " P_ |

Not trying to be bitchy here, but if you have been designing for 19 years (logo) how come the urgent need to do this has never arrisen. Honest question. |

I did everything by hand till '97 (not in the same way as the 'working from home' thread I do use the pen tool to create paths in PS which I'm guessing is pretty much similar to vector stuff. I tried using Illustrator once, about 5 years ago, but it was mid project and it just killed the flow, I guess because I am so comfortable/familiar with Photoshop. When I bought Macromedia Studio MX it came complete with Freehand 10 which has been sitting there begging me to use it but so far I haven't had the inclination or the need. Doing stuff this way has bit me in the face twice having designed something that was commisioned only for Web use but for which a 'real world' version was then required. Personally I hate going back to re-do something with no changes other than resolution. This should have motivated me to learn Freehand but both times I was too busy. Now I'm going through a quiet patch I should probably pull the book from the shelf, fire up Freehand and have a go at it... But I probably wont. |

I like the idea of Illustrator because of my familiarity with Photoshop but the fact that I own Freehand 10 means I'll have to go with that. Maybe as a project for this weekend... but then again maybe next :-/ |

I brainstorm first. Not graphics, fonts, layouts etc, but words - associations. Trucks=wheels, tarmac, driver, smoke, heavy, travel, distribution. That sort of thing, a big spider diagram. I go as far as I can till my brain is exhausted or I run out of time. As I go I have a separate section where I scribble visual ideas as the words bring them into my head. Then I come up with a few symbols/graphics for each word. I develop some of these further on paper, then finally take them to illustrator. By now you should have 20+ original logo's for your client to select from |
