Why are these people creating logos w/o even getting paid?
Would you build a room to show off what the house looks like? I don't understand why these people are doing logos for like 10-20$ and most aren't even getting paid, just a chance to get paid. Bullshit in question: Its all over in here. Graphic Design Contests |

For practice and portfolio. It's hard to get started in the design world if you arrive with no previous work, no portfolio and ask for £4000 for a logo. I do logos for free, not because I don't like getting paid, but because I need the practice and I want to improve my fairly meager portfolio. |

Many of them probably aren't professional designers and do it as a hobby. Or they just enjoy doing it. If they occasionally get the odd $50 for winning a competition, all the better. Ask yourself why some people here have post counts in the thousands and have probably answered hundreds of design related questions over the years, without receiving a penny for their advice. It's the same kind of motivation that makes people do logos. |

Its the same fucking this as sitepoints. 99designs Its a fucking joke. I will give you $50 for the header i like the most. 100 people do the work, one gets paid. Thats fucking bullshit lol - edit - and they arent all amateurs, i would say 35-45% are good quality and well thought out. These fucking companies are a joke. |

While I can see why you might be frustrated at what a cursory glance reveals to be a fruitless effort, you're being naive. If people simply waited to do what they enjoyed when offered a proper sum of money, much of the greatness in the world simply wouldn't exist. On the other hand, it's like what Paddy said. These competitions are something you can potentially put on your resume, and the work in your portfolio. It's practical. |

I actually took part in and won a few Sitepoint contests... it led on to other work from one of the clients. I got $233 for one logo and $150 for another... it's not too bad considering I was actually just searching the net for fake briefs so I would bulk out my folio. However... I did lose a good few, and a lot of the contest holders wouldn't even bother giving feedback, which is quite disappointing when you have been working your arse off on them. Then there's the whole devaluing the industry thing... it's not good in that respect. |

Sorry but that site offends me... I mean do they have no self respect... And the chimps running these competitions have got them at their beck and call. Its the cumlative effect that worries me , theres shitloads of other site of that ilk out there. There just re-inforcing the opinion that design isn't worth a toss! Bah! |
