[Critique] Logo for article / portfolio website

Heya,

I've been having a look around the forums for a while now and it seems like a place full of potential. There is a certain vibe coming off the forums that made me sign up and want to take part, so you'll be hearing from me alot more in the future!

I would appreciate some criticism on my latest logo design that I produced for my personal blog/portfolio website that will be used to post articles on design, programming, internet resources and posts about my work. I will explain the concept and idea behind the logo to give you a better idea why i chose the shape, fonts and style.

I wanted to give off a feeling of youth and modern design but still keep the idea of professionalism. I also wanted the logo to feel 'complete' and to achieve that I felt an enclosed shape would be perfect, this in turn answered my next requirement; I wanted the logo to show strength, but in a subtle way.

I chose the egg shape because not only was it an incredibly strong shape (try crushing one between your thumb and forefinger!), it symbolised protection and youth.

Now, don't be afraid.. I would like your most honest and heartfelt opinions on the design - I know for a fact this logo isn't going to appeal to everyone right now so I would like to know what you like and don't like about it - be as harsh or kind as you want.

I've attached 2 versions of the logo.

I look forward to your responses.

Regards,
Rob (rawkes)

Kind of feels needlessly 2.0 with the shiny reflection business going on.

And an egg sideways doesn't immediately pop "egg!" to me, I looked at the pictures before reading it, where the word rawkes pops out of the egg on the right options, it made me think of christmas light bulbs before egg really.

They're well made though, but they don't feel erm right to me, the thick inner keyline just seems a bit arbritrary too. One of those where I'm struggling to give useful feedback really, doesn't work as an egg like that and feels very run of the mill with the reflections.

Thanks for the comments, I can see where you're coming from on the christmas lights.. someone else said it reminded them of a sperm head so christmas lights is much more appreciated haha!

I wasn't intending for people to think of an egg when they look at the logo, but I was merely explaining my thought behind the shape.

I do agree with you that it doesn't feel "right", but thats why I'm here.

Do you have any comments on how you would improve or change it?

Regards,
Rob.

My two main suggestions which I usually internally yell at myself are - scribble on paper before you even think about scribbling digitally, and options! When you do start making it on a computer, half the benefit is being able to just create countless versions of a single item, varying it by position, angle, colour, effect, size, proportion, perspective, type.

I'm not presuming you haven't done this, but not everyone does it, and it always helps me, its always hard to latch onto a single idea and then craft it instead of making a bunch of quick options and then crafting those which "feel right"

My (hopefully not too patronising) schooling over, I'd suggest repositioning the egg vertically and removing the type from it completely. Possibly a cluster of eggs, eggs in a basket, eggs in an egg pack twin row of six, or just single eggs in a variety of colours and angles slightly off vertical, with maybe a plainer typeface...

Just play and try anything and everything really

It's quite funny that the ideas you suggested were all previous ideas jotted down in my notebook - we must think alike!

I appreciate your comments on scribbling ideas down before you play on a computer with the design, it's the the exact way I work as well. I find it so much easier to grab a pen and scrawl something out without trying to put it together on the computer and then losing the idea before I finish.

I'll go back to my notebook and pull some of the old ideas out and see how it goes, separating the text and logo seems like the best way to go for this project.

Some more ideas are flowing into my head as we speak, not egg based *shock!* - I'll come up with some more concepts until I find some that jump out at me, and post them here for more feedback.

In the meantime any more feedback on the current "egg" logos would be great!

Rob.

Would anyone else like to comment on the ideas?
