Hey everyone - just entered a competition to design a logo for my University Students' Union. I was instructed they wanted it called: Union of Students Northumbria. They want the Union portrayed as approachable and friendly. The logo had to be crisp, clean, modern and integrate into a variety of media. This is my submitted entry - it belongs to me at the minute but will be the University's logo if selected. This is my last opportunity to let anyone see it and give me an opinion before it has the chance to no longer be my property! |

i like the logo, but the type needs fixing.... "union of students" should be on one line above the "Northumbria" and the kerning/tracking and leading is all out of wack!!... fix it... never let the computer mechanically track your type!!! |

Thanks - I have little experience with logo design and I've fixed the kerning and leading. The grey thing in the background is so that the logo figuratively contains USN, the grey thing being the S. I tried the logo without it but didnt feel that it integrated well into print or web without the 's' shape - it unites the design together i think. |

On the point of subtlety - made the 's' figure outlined and worked a bit with the kerning and leading on the name. Took advice on putting 'union of students' on one line, lightened the text colour and took the emphasis of 'northumbria'. Hope you think its an improvement - any criticism is appreciated for a law student who has this as his hobbie! |

I see what you mean - i felt that the size of font on the text and its width balanced out the height of the vertical logo...surely if the logo itself is fine then it would be wrong to make the orientation of the text vertical to go with the logo, it sounds crap! |
