Yeah, it's an illustration, not a logo.
I feel you're choosing way too literal images (like Narate said)
Why don't you go for something simple and clean?

I realize this might've been done before, but I imagine something along these lines would be more representative for people who actually mean business?

Here's the situation, I haven't shown this to the guy yet, but I'm lucky if I can persuade him to not want to use a brain. When I talked to him about removing the brain from the design, his response was "but it's in the name." So, I sigh, take a deep breath, and try to find something that will tickle his fancy. This lad is stubborn. How do I design a logo without a brain or a wave that he'll like? Should I even do this? Or should I tell him, no brains or waves or heads! (as he says, fine i'll have someone else do it!)

Well, I got a little bit of Illustration under my belt at least. Thanks for all the comments.

Show him everything. If he likes something jut let him have it, and go to the pub then

no client wants shite design, if you end up with it then you haven't communicated succesfully enough wit the client. He may not be able to make the leap of faith about taking away the brain without you telling him why - his argument is solid 'its in the name' you now have to explain why it should be removed without referring to your personal tastes in any way - a logo does not always have to be literal representation of the name so show examples of other logos where it is not.

I agree with you. I explained why to him. He's had the brain as a logo for a couple years now. I think he's just attached to it. I've known the client for a while. I believe he thinks that a brain will give him an edgy look. Not too professional and fun at the same time. He doesn't seem to want a really corporate feel. It's probably more my own fault. This is the third professional logo I've ever designed, and only second in illustrator. I'm not exactly excreting amazing designs for him to pick from.

did you see bulldog broadband's logo?

Just type with a bit of flare to indicate what they're about. Could try 2 lines of type, Brainwave on top, Broadband below, and turn the w of wave into one of those medical brain wave thingies as people have shown you above. Or something with the d and b of broadband, cos they face back to back.

Also, there's plenty of empty spaces withing your letters, like in the B, that could be filled in and a few wrinkles cut out of it to make it look like a brain.

i just had a 5 minutes go in fireworks, to give an idea of what i meant. It's crap, but gives you the idea.

you guys all have good points. with the type, i've made a couple versions for that, but he preferred this one. the dish makes sense, because he's mainly wireless, even though it has nothing to do with brainwaves.
