I need an amateur Illustrator or four!

Hi guys

How would you like to add some content to my site?

Heres the deal, I have a blog site that details the life of Alfie Haggis. In short Alfie is trapped in space and has found a book called The Space Haggis Bible (SHB). Feel free to have a read of that to get up to date on it.

This book has information on every creature in the galaxy and throughout the blog I will add a page from it to the blog. Examples of the SHB are here and here.

What I would ask you to give me, would be your own page from the SHB and a picture or two of the creature you have made up. The examples Ive given have set the standard I am after so as long as its to that level or above I will feature your work and your link on the site!

So all Im really after is a picture of a crazy original creature and a paragraph or three backstory to that creature!

The way this benifits me is that in the world of blogging, content is king. So the more content I have, my site will get better.

I'd love to hear from any willing people out there, id really appreciate your effort.

if interested you can reach me at email@spacehaggis.com

Thanks for your time

Scott

The re-iterated promise of a link in return (and the leads it will "undoubtedly" generate) for the illustrator's work, makes your offer sound cheap and unprofessional. (We hear this kind of stuff over and over again)

You'd have been better off if you invited illustrators—personally and directly—to take part into your project (say have a different illustrator each month, for one particular "chapter"), because I'm sure some will find it fun enough to do it for free.

Hi Emil

Thanks for the quick reply.

I had no intention to "cheapen" the deal by offering the link. I just thought it would be a good thing to offer in return for the hard work by any interested illustrators thats all.

I'll take your advice on board, it would be great if there were people up for doing it. It would be fun for the illustrator seeing that there is alot of creative freedom involved.

If any illustrators would be interested in Emils Ideas with regards to featured illustrators each month/chapter, id also love to hear from you.

You can reach me at email@spacehaggis.com

Once again thanks for the critique Emil and cheers for the ideas.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

Thanks

Scott

Fuck off.
EDIT: A one way link from you would only really be worth while if the site is considered popular.

Didn't mean to come off as harsh as that sounded but as Emil said we get requests for work in exchange for a worthless link far too often.

Perhaps you'd have a different response if you were a known international publishing company or built a reputation on the forum first.

Hi

Ive removed any link talk from my original post. I did NOT want that to sound cheap in anyway. I know you guys are a talanted lot and put alot of hard work into your art.

In no way did i intend on cheapening that.

I just know that this place is a great resource for talented illustrators and had hoped to work with some of you.

As far as gain a reputation on the board, yes, I am a bit of a lurker. Been on the boards for a long time but dont post too often.

Maybe i should change that.

Thanks

Scott

Still not the best wording, but we think the matter's been cleared.
You seem okay, stick around, maybe someone will have the time to help you out.

Ouch! Yeah, I'm afraid that is the kind of response you may expect to get unless you approach designers/illustrators in just the right way. You may have the best of intentions, but sometimes people bristle because others have used the same tactics to undervalue creative professions -- and approaching amateurs specifically doesn't address that perception.

The good news is the kind of project you appear to be undertaking has been accomplished before (many times I'm sure). I can't say what particular combination of factors makes this sort of thing catch on in a grassroots way, but it may be useful to take notes.

Anyway, best of luck.

Thanks

Thanks for your advice KR

Yeah like I say I didnt mean no harm with the request. Taking the bigger picture into account I can understand why my original post may have been taken out of context.

I know you guys are a talented bunch. I just wish I had some of the skills and knowledge that you guys have to put into practice for my own site.

I guess though its a learning curve and Im just starting out.

I've been using GIMP on Ubuntu for the images on the site so far, im having alot of fun with it. By that I mean not only creating the images for the site, but hte site in general.

The offer is still open though, if you would like to contribute to my site then I would be eternally gratefull, if not then I'd love to be pointed in the right direction as regards to illustration resources I could use to help me improve.

As for the comment regarding my post not being worded greatly, I was at work when I submitted it and sites like this can get me insta-fired if caught! I was walking on the wild side being here in the first place! :P

In saying that Im sure this aint worded that great either. Excuse? Been out on he p1ssup to watch the Czech republic hammer my beloved Scotland. It was sore to watch but if im being honest, the better team won

Alfie

I've been doing a lot of work to build my illustration skills lately and have just gotten into vector art. This sounds like a fun project that will give me a bit of practice in the process. Should I just email you when I get it finished?

Had a few people interested in this, are there any others that would like to come aboard the Space Haggis bandwagon?!
