I drew this up last night and have undergone coloring it. Still a WIP as you can see but I'm having some trouble making the sky color work, anyone have any suggestions such as technique/color/sun. This is my first legitimate attempt at this process of work. ![]() |

Sky is not to bad but the rocks across the way are in high detail which makes them look close Which is effecting the horizon line. Looks like she poohed her undies And what is the shading at the water line? is that wet sand? If so might pay to make the water line follow a similar curve. Good job on the head. I'm really not a fan of the colours. But the linework is great. Have you tried using water colours? Feel free to disregard me - you have to follow your heart, but in my opinion the digital colouring cheapens it. Last edited by bjzaba : 11-03-2010 at 01:51. |

I haven't played much with the yellow in the sky which I really should to make it appear as if the sun really is back there. I definitely understand your statement about digital coloring making ink look a bit cheap. Usually I watercolor my doodles but I wanted to have a go at the digital bit to see if it opened up any new possibilities. |

I'm not the best with colour myself, but it looks like you've just tried to fill the whole area with as much and as many colours as possible... some more thought maybe? As I said before, the pink on the shirt looks nice - maybe you could build a colour scheme off that? |

I make the linework with a Micron pen or a finepoint Sharpie> Scan it> Raise the contrast to get rid of any dirt/folds/etc and just leave the lines> Set the linework layer to Multiply and leave it at the top. From then on I just add color/textures on layers underneath the linework. I started with just using the pentool to color things in, but found adding some low opacity softbrush work gave everything a more dynamic feel while still maintaining a simple look. When I feel that all the color is in place I add some adjustment layers/filters/gradients on the very top and call it a day. Hope that makes sense. You can live trace, if you're looking to make sketchy lines look a bit more inklike or smooth. I'll probably try to give it a go on my next piece and see how it looks.
