What do illustrators charge?

Hello,

I will potentially get a job doing illustrations for a kids book but I have never done any illustration work professionally. What sort of pricing schemes do you illustrators use particularly when working with a publisher? Thanks so much.

i'm not an illustrator my self, but i think web design/dev is similar.

You charge either a flat rate that will definitely cover the amount of time you think it will take you (plus a little extra in case there are problems) or you can charge an hourly rate, and give the client an estimate of how much time it will take.

What should that hourly rate be, in either case? At least $50/hr, probably 90% of professional illustrators charge more too.

Plus, things like rush orders can up the price quite a bit.

Illustrators generally base their fees on 'usage'.
Here is a link to a UK site (The Association of Illustrators) where you'll find
how illustrators arrive at a fee, examples of fees for different uses and a useful
Acceptance of Commission form.
Of course the fees are in GB£ but you should be able to get an idea.

edit: I've found I can't post URL's as I haven't posted enough times so go to:

www(dot)theaoi(dot)com

Under 'resources' in the left hand menu you'll find 'documents'.

The pricing guide and commission form are in there.

All the best with the book.

Scotty

Same as any contract job

What you think your time is worth x hours spent + expenses = estimate.

so if you think you should be earning 35k a year, divide it by the number of hours you want to work and multiply it by the hours you think it will take to do the job.

I'm just about to graduate so I'm obviously not basing this on experience (the only piece of published work i've had so far was unpaid) but from the various professional practice lectures i've had, Scotty is correct in that it's based on usage. For example, the same illustration to be used for an editorial piece wouldn't pay the same as if it was to go on a 48 sheet poster.

I charge around 25 pounds per hour. I have charged more in the past, but 25gbp/50USD is a nice rate IMO.
