Adding a stroke is piss easy in Photoshop. Assuming you are using a late version, double click the layer to access effects and choose stroke then play around with parameters.

yes but is a key line the same as a stroke. I use stroke all of thetime but I am not sure if this gives the same effect.

say for instance you design a solid button that is a rectangle with a semicircle at one end and then you do a stroke of colour 1 pixel large do you do that large and then scale it down in something like photoshop

There are various definitions for keyline.

I don't understand why you want to make it and then scale it down in 'something like Photoshop'? Why not just make it in there in the first place.

You mean a shape like this: with a stroke? (which took 30 seconds in Photoshop btw).

You don't really want to make a larger version of what you want with a size of 1 pixel and then scale it down because 1 pixel is the smallest unit of display on a screen.

Why not just ask your boss what he actually wants?

1. Select the shape tool for round cornered rectangles (U)
2. Set the radius for the size you want - for the above I used 30px.
3. Draw the shape so it's a perfect semi-circle either end.
4. Select the path.
5. Delete the anchor point in the middle of the semi-circle you want to straighten.
6. Using the point convert tool straighten the edge that you want to be straight.
7. Double click the layer on the right hand side.
8. Select stroke and dilute to taste.

No idea if it's the way others would do it because it's not something I've done before so I just did what was obvious to me.

I would probably just draw a rectangle the size I wanted (using rectangular selection tool) and draw a circle (using the elliptical selection tool) and stick 'em together - seems faster/easier than dealing with paths and point conversions - then add stroke through the layer effects thinger-ma-jigger.

30 seconds sounds about right.

well that is the way i always did it but i am working with other designers now and they looked horrified when i told them how i did it and now i have tried it the path way it seems alot more accurate and easier to update should you have to change the keyline colour in the future.

Honest i am a good designer lol i just dont know the name of things i do on a daily basis i just use the word thingymajig for everything lol
